On a warm summer night 30 years ago, I headed out of the house to go visit a friend and said good goodbye to my Mom. It was the last time I saw her alive. In those pre-cellphone days, no one knew where I was, so when I returned home around midnight to find a driveway full of people, I assumed there was some kind of party going on. If only... She remains frozen in my mind, standing at the sink finishing the dishes before heading out for a bike ride that would prove fatal. I dont remember what I said to her; probably something pithy...see you later, most likely. Three decades on, I miss her more than ever. She missed out on grandkids, and they missed out on her. The woman who worked with kids with disabilities would have been a blessing to Andrew. I see her spirit and kind nature in my girls; theyre poorer for not having known her. Shed be in her 70s now, which is incomprehensible to me. Many of her friends are now my friends on Facebook; now and then we share a memory, a story or a laugh, and I can only imagine what it would be like if she were still with us. Having said all that, I prefer to look forward, not back. I have a wonderful life, and she gave me a great start. She was (and is) my inspiration, my counselor, and my friend. Our conversations are a bit one-sided these days, but I still look to her for advice. I wish I were half the parent she was. Ive done my best, but have stumbled. A lot. My mom was the finest human being I have ever known...not perfect by far, but loved, remembered and missed. We should all be so lucky to leave a legacy like that behind.
