On another fine and sunny day up at the park, the 1st XI were put into bat by a sherburn side trying to make their way up the Div A table after a disappointing early season. On a wicket that looked like it would do plenty for the bowlers Wykeham didnt get off to the greatest of starts losing both Dave Pearson and Ben Metcalfe early on. Things steadied up after this with a progressive partnership between James Bryant (25) and Ezra Pashby (31) moving the total along at a convincing rate. I then decided that i didnt want to do things the easy way and decided to run Ezzy out, following him back to the pavillion shortly after with the total on 58. Following this both runs and wickets both ticked over steadily but a superb knock of 30 from Brendon and also Shepoid chipping in with very handy 19 (in his first appearance for the 1s this year) taking the final total to a defendable 135. A defendable score but having used only 35 of our available overs things could have been much more convincing. The run rate certainly not being an issue but just need to steady the wicket rate up a bit. In reply sherburn got off to a confident start more than keeping up with the required run rate and with the score on 40-1 they looked settled. Tight opening spells from both Gareth Barnard and (MOM) Marcus im not going to bounce the ball higher than your ankles Edwards and very sharp fielding all round preventing this score from being higher. This however is where the page turned. Gazza (who finished with 1-22-5) was replaced by Matthew Vincent at the pavillion end who as usual unsettled every batsman he faced not only with his bowling but also his lovely pony tail, not particularly taking wickets but keeping the run rate right down. Marcus began to take effect from the Abbey End and grabbed 3 quick wickets finishing 3-23-11. At this point Wykehams number 1 change bowler was brought into the attack, Stretch, using only 13 balls, cleaned up the remainder of the sherburn attack conceeding only 1 run in the process, finishing 4-1-2.1 dismissing them for a total of 70. A top all round performance especially in the field. We just await the comittee decision of the brompton vs grindale game to see if we have made any ground on the leaders but if we play like this for the remainder of the season promotion to the prem is a distinct possibility
