On investigating Betty Treacles unusual name, I have found accounts of a farmhouse occupied by “Jammie Trader” (Wilkinson) and a cottage occupied by “Owd Tacklety-Mash” (James Hargreaves), whose tombstone I have seen, on a cold afternoon with only a black cat for company, in the grounds of Goodshaw Chapel. In another was “Lolly Flourcake” (Lawrence Ashworth) and in another “John o’Jacks” (Whittles).
