On mornings, in spring, along the ranch and citrus grove country, - TopicsExpress

On mornings, in spring, along the ranch and citrus grove country, doves sit atop white boards of fences while egrets and ibises hang closely to the horses and cattle. If it were drier and the grasses browner and the cattle and horses were rhinos and elephants, the way the birds flock to them, and the flattness of the land, it could be the Serengeti. But, there are no great creatures with horns and tusks, only the domesticated animals that seem sad too. Fences and walls tend to do that to all animals that they keep inside or outside them. Some men know. Some men will never know. But there is something that fills you when you are far from fences and walls that touches the primitive part of the soul and once you have felt it, you never truly return to civilization.
