On one hand, it is easy to say that Muslims, especially converts, should learn to separate Islam from the Muslims. The inadequacy of its practitioners are separate from the perfection of the doctrine. All that is theory. Religion is about relationships. The Muslims are Islam. The failure of the Muslims then becomes the failure of Islam. People are hurt, they are broken, they are bereft. And then they may leave, and they are justified to do so. For those on the outside judging, it is easy to speak about faith when that faith is not being tested. Their leaving is not their test. It is the test of the ummah. We are all collectively answerable for failing one of our own. Ultimately, it is not Muslims who call them back, it is not Islam that entices them to return. It is God Himself Who Calls them home. As Allah (s.w.t.) Says in a hadits qudsi, My servant has forgotten Me. But I have not forgotten my servant. Everyone of us will come home. Some just take a scenic route.
