On our last trip to the Caribbean we found a new place that is very interesting. It is Tortola, British Virgin Islands, which was recently added to our itinerary. It was interesting because (so far as we could see) the island supports a quality of life standard that Americans could easily tolerate. They actually have a town complete with sidewalks, traffic lights, prosperous businesses that have little to do with tourism. They are however enlarging their port facilities to attract larger ships and adding a few acres of shops for tourists. We didnt get a chance to see their beaches, but heard they were great (but a bit remote). The island has only 28,000 residents and it seems very provincial with the obvious hint of British rule and legacy. I think this place could be a great retirement option for some. And I think it has a great future in tourism. I would like to spend more time there myself.
