On the 26th of September 1989, the golden voice of the saint stopped. On a black and white TV, the next day, we watched his last procession, through his most beloved city. To my remembrance, the unforgettable Diner Sheshe Ghumer Deshe.... (At the end of the day, in the lap of the siesta), the perennial Rabindranath Tagore song, that he had recorded some years ago, was played ceaselessly, as boundless admirers thronged the main streets of Kolkata, to bid him farewell. youtube/watch?v=sVWQtYf0W7k A few years passed - the nostalgia around the voice did not fade! When the seminal composer R.D.Burman was scripting a miracle through 1942-A Love Story, he recorded a song called Yeh Safar with the melodious Shivaji Chattopaddhyay, an associate and a student of the legendary singer. A de facto honor was bestowed upon him! youtube/watch?v=m3ekXyej3Nc A few more years passed; the millennium arrived and with that arrived different moods, minds, thoughts, tastes, views. But his once-a-rage, earthen, breezy, free and simple song did not lose its sheen. Dhitang dhitang bole....(1955), a super-experiment by the great Salil Chaudhury, after so many decades, still sounds so fresh and lively. By being so, its charioteer--the legend by the name Hemanta Mukherjee--still rules our heart! youtube/watch?v=ehLJFMI33AA
