On the 29th December 1933 Neil Dewar leaves Manchester United for Sheffield Wednesday with Wednesday players George Nevin and with Jack Ball moving to Old Trafford as part of the £3000 deal. Dewar was born on the 11th November 1908 in Lochgilphead, Argyllshire and began his working life as a trawler fisherman. United had paid £4000 for Dewar from Scottish side Third Lanark. In his United career he played 36 times and was on the score sheet 14 times. Neil Dewars move to Sheffield Wednesday caused somewhat of a scandal as he eloped with the young daughter of United director, Councillor AE Thompson over the Pennines. This led to Thompsons subsequent resignation from the Manchester United board. Dewar and Miss Thompson eventually married in a registry office and during Dewars first season in Sheffield, the couple had a child, Neil junior, who in time also became a footballer, playing for non league Altrincham.
