On the first Friday of every month the Ukrainian Orthodox Church off Main St. in Vancouver has a perogie dinner fundraiser. With a side of cabbage rolls. And borscht if you want it. Its become an institution. There is a line up out the door to get in. I havent gone in years until tonight. I love everything about it. The line up, the volunteers of all ages, the ghastly fluorescent lights in the church hall, the paper placements that you write your name on to hold your place at the table. Babies, old Chinese, old Ukrainians, young hipsters, dusty crucifixes next to a framed picture of Queen Elizabeth. And this, the ultimate declaration of satisfaction from my kid and his buddy: That was so good I think Im gonna puke. The good things.
