On the subject of working from photographs. I rarely work from photos, but I do use my Iphone a lot to capture images Ill return to later for information about composition, mood, and texture. When I am between paintings I often look back through my phone to see which kind of images caught my eye as we were traveling across the country. Small details of layered color (i.e. the Coca Cola billboard) and huge simple shapes of light and dark (like the redwood trees in Northern California) - - - looking for my way into what kind of energy and mood will spark a news painting. Sometimes I wake up with an image on my mind and look through photos to see if I can find a reference to support it.
