On this 13th day of March in 1909 pioneering R&B guitarist Saunders King was born in Staples, LA. King had his first hit with the #1 S.K. Blues in 1942. The record was one of the first featuring an electric guitar, and was in the style that T-Bone Walker would soon make famous. King recorded for the Alladin, Modern and Rhythm labels, and probably would have made a much larger impact if personal problems hadn`t interfered. His wife commited suicide in 1942, and he was later shot and seriously wounded by his landlord, and served time in San Quentin for heroin possession. He gave up secular music in 1961 and dedicatd himself to the church. King briefly re-surfaced in 1979 to appear on his son-in-law Carlos Santana`s Oneness album. King suffered a stroke in 1999 and died on Augaust 31, 2000 at age 91. Check out Cool Blues, Jumps and Shuffles on Ace Records. youtu.be/ITyRJxizAsQ
