On this Day in 1915. 25 January. HMS Inflexible A Sailor’s Diary 1912 – 1918. In preparation for the Dardanelles expedition HMS Inflexible met with naval units from Britain and France. Fred wrote: “Arrived at some harbour on an unknown island with no habitation in sight. Five French destroyers and 3 French battleships and ‘Indefatigable & a British destroyer.” Great War Sharpshooter I. In Norfolk there was news of the war. The Colonel wrote: “News of a battle in the North Sea yesterday. A German Cruiser sunk, and two others seriously damaged. They were apparently making for the coast again. Attended Sir Samuel Hoare’s funeral at Sidestrand. He died suddenly, after three days illness, on the 20th.” The battle to which the Colonel referred became known as the battle of Dogger Bank.
