On this Day in Weather History...19 Aug In 1987, severe thunderstorms moving from Eastern Nebraska to Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri, produced hail 3 inches in diameter, and winds that reached 80 mph. The 3 inch diameter hail bombarded Albion, Nebraska, located 25 miles southwest of Norfolk. Baseball sized hail struck just northwest of Topeka in Jackson County. Especially hard hit was Franklin County, where crop damage was around $3.5 million and 10 people were injured. Later the small town of Fulton, Kansas was whipped by 80 mph gusts. In 1991, Hurricane Bob roared ashore at Newport, Rhode Island and made its final United States landfall as a tropical storm at Rockland, Maine. Gusts reached 143 mph at Westport, Massachusetts. Sixteen people were killed, while power was lost to around 2 million homes and businesses. Damage was estimated at $1.5 billion. In 1969, never say die Camille let loose a cloudburst in Virginia resulting in flash floods and landslides which killed 151 persons and caused 140 million dollars damage. Massies Hill, Virginia received 27 inches of rain.
