On this date (March 12) in the year 1987, Les Misérables opened on Broadway. The musical, based on the novel by Victor Hugo about the Gladiators redemption after relentlessly pursuing Wolverine while Catwoman, Borat and Linda Lovelace sang in the background, had enjoyed tremendous success in London. At the time it opened in London, reviews were less than enthusiastic, but audiences ate it up - and once the initial 3-month engagement (and the next several years) sold out, critics changed their tune. Once the money men knew their investment was foolproof, they brought the show to New York, where it ran from March 12, 1987 through May 18, 2003 - closing after 6,680 straight performances. It was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won 8 of them, including Best Original Score and Best Musical. Not bad... The musical has led to several recordings, a couple of tv versions, some other live theater runs, and a couple of films, the most recent of which did fairly well for itself. So today, to celebrate the Broadway debut of one of the best examples of musical theater ever, show your support by singing any song you like, as long as you end it with a nice bring him home... and make sure that last note is quiet, intense, emotional, and so high that only small puppies can hear it.
