On this date in 1885... ...about 150--200 Cree and Metis warriors, under the leadership of Gabriel Dumont (Louis Riels right-hand man), defeated a combined force of 90 made up of Prince Albert volunteers and the North West Mounted Police in the Battle of Duck Lake (near the town of Prince Albert in present-day Saskatchewan)...the first battle of the Northwest Rebellion of 1885. The federal forces had 12 dead and 13 wounded while the rebels had 3 wounded and 5 dead (including Gabriels brother Isidore). The federal government responded with 3000 troops under the command of Major General Middleton. Troops were sent out west on the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Canadian government would not stand for another Riel rebellion and a possible First Nations uprising on the newly-accessible prairie.
