On this date, in 1963, THE OUTER LIMITS debuted on television. This anthology series is often compared to the classic THE TWILIGHT ZONE but focised more on science fiction than the strange and fantastical sort of stories that TZ delivered. There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission... were the classic words that began the monlogue that opened the show. Which gave us some of the most compelling episodes in anthology television. Featuring writers such as Leslie Stevens, Joseph Stefano, Harlan Ellison and others. Many episodes followed a formula wherein a creature/monster/being would appear by the episodes conclusion. The directors referred to this as The Bear. In fact it is the stuff of legend, that The Bear from the episode entitled The Architects of Fear was so terrifying that they blacked out the screen during initial broadcast. The practice of using a monster as the centerpiece of each episode would be used decades later in the cable horror-antho series, MONSTERS. Stephen King claims it is the best program of its type ever to run on network TV. A statement he has made in intyerviews as well as in his novel length dissection of the horror genre, Danse Macabre. There was a modern reboot of the series on the Showtime network in the late 90s. It was pretty poopy. If you were a kid, growing up in the sixties, seventies or eighties, chances are good that youve caught this influential show. If you havent in these days of Netflix and whatever other magical viewing systems there are, you have no excuse. --John
