On this date in 1980, a Texaco oil rig in Lake Peigneur north of Delcambre, Louisiana, inadvertently punched a hole in the bottom of the freshwater lake. allowing it to drain into the Diamond Crystal Salt Company mine underneath. The resulting whirlpool sucked in the drilling platform, eleven barges, many trees, and 65 acres of the surrounding countryside. Prior to the accident, the water flowed from Lake Peigneur into Vermilion Bay via the Delcambre Canal. Once the lake drained away, this flow was reversed and the lake refilled with salt water from Vermilion Bay. Air in the mine displaced by the inflowing water was compressed and erupted through the mine-shafts as 400-ft high geysers. No injuries occurred.
