On this date in history in 1933, in the midst of the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was created by Franklin D. Roosevelt, putting thousands of unemployed young men to work on projects such as planting trees in national forests, building roads and dams, fighting forest fires and building improvements in national parks. By the time Congress abolished the agency in 1942, more than 2 million men had served. Source: history
