On this day Congress passed legislation in 1958 that created NASA. This was in response to Russia launching a satellite (Sputnik), which created a scare that their technologies were superior to ours. The "Space Race" was born out of this, which led to the United States putting a man on the moon in 1969; only 11 short years later! Some would argue that the spending that came from the space race and other arms proliferation is what ultimately led to the end of the Soviet Union and our complete emergence as THE world superpower.
