On this day (Dec. 4) in 1957: because of the furor created by Elvis Presleys recently released Elvis Christmas Album (RCA Victor), radio station CKWS in Kingston, Ontario played the album in its entirety, opening the phones to public comment (most listeners approved of the record); the controversy was caused by Irving Berlin, composer of White Christmas, who lobbied to have Elvis version of his song - & the entire album - banned from radio airplay; Berlin considered it a profane parody of his cherished yuletide standard & ordered his staff in New York to telephone radio stations across the US, demanding the song be discontinued from radio play…
