On this day, back in 1776, our proud country took its first breaths as a new and independent nation, forever changing the course of world history. Since then, we have fought for and secured our independence on two separate occasions, suffered and overcame a Civil War which threatened our unity, partaken in two World Wars, survived a Great Depression, fought the spread of communism, put a man on the moon, and reached unprecedented advances in human knowledge. We have been led by 43 Presidents and 113 sessions of Congress, protected by one of the finest military forces in the world, and blessed by a Constitution whose words and amendments protect our freedom. We often forget to count our blessings that we live in such a country, a country that is not ravaged by war, famine, or extreme poverty. We have the means by which to achieve change in the world. But the change must start here, with us. We all must take action to make this country an even better place, to raise our flag as a true symbol of freedom, and to make America the country that it was born to be.
