On this day back in 1956, more than 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in protest against pass laws in particular, and apartheid in general. Racist Prime Minister, JG Strijdom, got so scared that he ran away instead of confronting those women. Today we commemmorate the bravery of those heroines. We are not celebrating hairstyles or whatever. We salute the spirit of Lillian Ngoyi, Hellen Josephs, Sophie de Bruyn and their colleagues. Those are the heroines of our struggle.
