On this day in 1915 Ken Eglin was born. He died on the 26th of January, 1984. Ten years later, on this day in 1925, Ed Rogers was born, and he died on the 9th of February, 2002. Kens music reviews (Kens Corner) were a much loved feature in The Duplex Planet and they expanded to run in other publications. I took him to clubs to hear bands and he and I were guests on the wonderfully tipsy cable access television show Club Genius, hosted by Rudy Cheeks in Providence, RI (this can be found on YouTube - look for the episode that also has The Incredible Casuals). An entire chapter of the book No More Shaves (visit the Duplex Planet website) is devoted to the comic adaptations of my conversations with Ken, as well as artist Waynos rich version of Kens take on all sorts of music. Eds drawings found favor with many, and became a part of R.E.M.s Out of Time album (as well as releases by Fred Frith & Henry Kaiser, Cul de Sac, Jim Stephanson, and Rick Harper). Hes also seen in the documentary Lighthearted Nation directed by Jim McKay and produced by Michael Stipe. About a hundred of Eds drawings were collected into an exhibit I curated in the nineties titled An Exact Spectacular, which was shown at St. Lawrence University, the Erie Art Museum, Union College, and the Pacific Northwest College of Art. His distinct lettering style was made into a type font commercially available from the wise and hip company P22 (which can be found easily online). A platinum record from R.E.M. that was inscribed and sent to Ed hung on his wall in the nursing home where he lived, and is now on one of my walls. A carefully wrapped box containing an urn with Eds ashes are on a shelf in my office. duplexplanet/giftshop/magazine.htm
