On this day in 1962, the famed Gotham Hotel closed to make room for a portion of the expanding Detroit Medical Center complex. The elegant nine-story black-owned hotel was a popular entertainment and social gathering place for the city’s African-American community. During a farewell celebration held at the hotel during its last week of operation, Common Council member William T. Patrick, Jr. presented to co-owner John J. White a plaque and said, “The closing of the hotel is the end of an era. The hotel, located at 111 Orchestra Place in the Paradise Valley district, was demolished in 1963. #On This Day: African American Life in Detroit
