On this day in 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong, Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin, and Command Module Pilot Michael Collins departed from Merritt Island in Florida to undertake the first human lunar landing. The mission, entitled Apollo 11, was broadcast to a world-wide audience of millions, with a surface landing occurring five days later at 20:17:40 UTC, prompting Armstrong to remark that the first step on the moon was “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Enclosed is a photo of the Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket at twilight, prior to the launch.
