On this day in 1983: The Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon is attacked by a suicide bomber, killing 220 Marines, 18 Sailors and 3 Soldiers. It was the most single-day loss of life for Marines since Iwo Jima. Three Navy Chaplains, George Pucciarelli, Danny Wheeler, and Arnie Resnicoff, exemplified the true spirit of collaboration across faiths, as they ministered to the Marines and Sailors in the aftermath of this tragedy. They were later awarded the “Hall of Heroes Gold Medallion” by the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation. George Pucciarelli (from a piece of Pucciarellis camouflage uniform) after Resnicoffs kippa was bloodied when it was used to wipe the face of a wounded Marine after the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing.
