On this day in Soviet history, 1943: the largest tank battle in history, the Battle of Prokhorovka, started between the German Wehrmacht’s Panzer Army and the Soviet Fifth Guards Tank Army. Soviet soldiers displayed incredible bravery, sometimes removing their boots and overcoats to move easier and charging the German tanks armed only with anti-tank grenades. Tactically the battle was a stalemate, but from that point until the end of WWII, the Red Army held the strategic initiative. -Sarah- courtesy; Soviet Union
