On this day in music history: December 27, 1980 - (Just Like) Starting Over by John Lennon hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 5 weeks. Written by John Lennon, it is the second and final solo chart topper for the iconic singer, songwriter, and musician. Issued as the first single from Double Fantasy, Lennon will be inspired to write the song during the sessions for the album after hearing a Roy Orbison song on the radio. The ringing of Yokos wishing bell at the beginning of the track is a response to the church bell ringing at the start of Lennons first solo album (before the beginning of the track Mother) released ten years before. The 12 promotional single features a longer fadeout than the LP/45 release of the song, running twenty three seconds longer. Issued just three weeks ahead of the album, (Just Like) Starting over will enter the Hot 100 at #38 on November 1, 1980, it will begin a swift and steady ascent up the charts. The single is sitting at #6 the week ending December 6, 1980, when two days later on Monday, December 8, 1980, Lennon is shot and killed by a deranged fan in the entry way to The Dakota Apartments in New York City, where he and wife Yoko Ono reside. Three weeks after the tragic incident, (Just Like) Starting Over will become the fourth posthumous number one single of the rock era, also topping the charts in seven other countries including Spain, Ireland, Australia, and the UK. (Just Like) Starting Over is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
