On this day in music history: January 3, 1970 - The final Beatles recording session takes place in Studio Two at Abbey Road in London. The band records the George Harrison song “I Me Mine” for the “Let It Be” album, since an acoustic version the song performed by Harrison is heard briefly in the film, but was not properly recorded during the January 1969 sessions. Only George, Paul, and Ringo perform on the song since John Lennon is out of the country on vacation at the time of the session. The recording will be the last time Harrison, McCartney, and Starr record together until working on the tracks Free As A Bird and Real Love for the Anthology series in 1994 and 1995. Producer Phil Spector will later add orchestral overdubs and extend the running time of the original track from a minute and twenty seconds to almost two and a half minutes, nearly doubling its length. The original non-extended version of the track will appear on the bands Anthology 3 album in 1996, with another mix of the song, using the extended edit minus Phil Spectors post production is included on the compilation Let It Be...Naked in 2003.
