On this day in music history: June 25, 1983 - “Flashdance - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” hits #1 on the Billboard Top 200 for 2 weeks. Compilation Producer: Giorgio Moroder, Soundtrack Supervisor: Phil Ramone. Album Producers: Giorgio Moroder, Pete Bellotte, Phil Ramone, Keith Olsen, Michael Sembello, and Ronald Magness. Issued as the soundtrack to the Adrian Lyne directed film starring Jennifer Beals and Michael Nouri, it features tracks from Irene Cara, Michael Sembello, Donna Summer, Laura Branigan, Joe Esposito, Kim Carnes, Karen Kamon, Shandi Sinnamon, Cycle V, and Helen St. John. Like the film, the soundtrack is a massive unexpected success, becoming a pop cultural phenomenon. It will spin off four singles including “Flashdance… What A Feeling” (#1 Pop, #2 R&B) and “Maniac” (#1 Pop). The soundtrack’s distributor Polygram Records will underestimate demand for the album, initially pressing only 60,000 copies, which will sell out within two days of the film’s opening on April 15, 1983. The “Flashdance” soundtracks’ popularity is so great that it will temporarily bump Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” from the number one spot on the pop album chart. The soundtrack will also win two Grammy Awards including Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or a Television Special, with the title track winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1984. The “Flashdance - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” is certified 6x Platinum in the US by the RIAA.
