On this day in the year; 1898 – Cheerleading, (organized cheerleading started as an all-male activity as early as 1877), is started at the University of Minnesota with Johnny Campbell leading the crowd in cheering on the football team. 1920 – In the United States, KDKA of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania starts broadcasting as the first commercial radio station. The first broadcast is the result of the United States presidential election, 1920. 1947 – In California, designer Howard Hughes performs the maiden (and only) flight of the Spruce Goose or H-4 The Hercules; the largest fixed-wing aircraft ever built. Footage below. 1957 – The Levelland UFO Case in Levelland, Texas. Considered by ufologists to be one of the most impressive in UFO history, mainly because of the large number of witnesses involved over a relatively short period of time. However, both the US Air Force and UFO skeptics have labeled the incident as being caused by either ball lightning or a severe electrical storm. 1959 – Quiz show scandals: 21 game show contestant Charles Van Doren admits to a Congressional committee that he had been given questions and answers in advance. 1960 – Penguin Books is found not guilty of obscenity in the trial R v Penguin Books Ltd., the Lady Chatterleys Lover case.
