On this day, we pause to remember the service and memory of Patrolman Ronald J. Mahony, who died July 13, 1977, while working as a motorcycle officer for the Clearwater Police Department. He began working for the department on Sept. 10, 1976 -- his 21st birthday. A little after 10 p.m. on the day of his death, he stopped a stolen truck on Memorial Causeway. While being questioned, the driver suddenly tried to flee and Patrolman Mahony was struck when the truck overturned. He was buried at Sylvan Abbey.
