On this very day November 22, 1873 a man by the name of Horatio G. Spafford who was described as a man of unusual intelligence and refinement, deeply spiritual, and a devoted student of the Scriptures, having recently experienced the death of his son, and having lost all his investments and holdings wiped out by a disaster in Chicago arranged for his remaining family, his wife and 4 daughters to sail to Europe, desiring to give them much needed rest and time away. At the last moment an unexpected last minute business development caused him to have to remain behind. He sent his family on as scheduled and would follow to meet them in a few days...... On this very day November 22nd the ship his family was on was struck by an English vessel during a severe storm and sunk in 12 minutes... There were only a few survivors...His wife cabled her husband, saved alone. All of his daughters were lost at sea. On the sea traveling to be reunited with his wife close to the spot where his 4 daughters were lost he penned the words of this wonderful Hymn It is Well with My Soul... Although he penned this text with words so significantly describing his own personal grief...When sorrow like sea billows roll.... it is noteworthy that he did not dwell on the theme of lifes sorrows and trials but focused on what Christ did for us on the Cross of Salvation and the anticipation of His second coming when we will be with Christ forever.... May we all in our deepest trials, and our greatest sorrows be blessed and encouraged by the words of this Hymn... When peace like a river attendeth my way, When sorrow like sea billows roll, Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul Tho Satan should buffet, tho trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, that Christ hath regarded my helpless estate, and has shed His own blood for my soul My sin o the bliss of this glorious thot, My sin not in part, but the whole, Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord Oh my soul! And Lord hast the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend, Even so, It is well with my soul! It is well, it is well, It is well with my soul.
