Once again, I share my dream that every band director who made the wonderful investment of taking students to a drum corps show this summer will take students to a concert or rehearsal of the nearest professional orchestra or military band this school year. If you took students to a movie theater for prelims, take them back for a Met Opera cinecast (God and Peter Gelb willing). If you showed the DCI finals livestream in your band room, show a New York Philharmonic broadcast or college wind ensemble webcast. I love drum corps and marching band, and Im thrilled for everyone who marched this summer and marches this fall. Lets just all be sure we inspire our students with the same (or more) enthusiasm, energy, and love for concert music—and ensure that commitment and achievement in one area of our programs translates to student growth and musical understanding in all areas of our programs.
