Once again we approach the time of year when we should reflect and remember all those who unselfishly gave all for their families & countries. As it is a century on since WW 1 it is particularly poignant to gather information on those family members who served so that they are remembered! My grandfather Lt. Jessie Stokes who joined the Royal Navy in South Africa in September 1914, and led a South African Royal Naval Contingent of infantry (strangely enough not the Royal Marines!) He served in Gallipoli in 1915 and Flanders thereafter before being invalided out after injuries caused by being buried alive by bombardment and gassed. We can never understand the horrors that they had to contend with, however we can honour their sacrifice, regardless of where they came from in the world.
