Once i refused to teach a student Kung fu and philosophy. they said to me, I want to be as good as you, as fast, strong and be able to defend with a blindfold against 6 people. to be able to smash coconuts with the bare hand and lay under a board of nails and show my strength when the sledge hammer smashes the concrete blocks stacked upon my body I said you are no good to teach, I dont want you as a student. He asked is it because of the things he wanted to do? I said NO it is because of the one thing you didnt want to do. He was confused. So i explained. When you see a sign that says Road ahead one mile, how do you know it is only one mile? His reply was because someone travelled it and measured it and said so. I said ok. Why doesnt the road say two miles? He said because it is one I said is it not because those who were instructed it was one mile, didnt have the urge to seek further and make that road grow to greater learning? did they not just sit down and say well that is it i seen the road? A student is not to learn and be equal to the masters teaching. the student is to learn from the masters teaching and use it to adapt to their own journey ahead. You will never compliment the master by doing the same, you will compliment the masters teaching by surpassing his teaching. Only then can you say his teachings work, And that is when you do things to be the best of yourself not to be as good as another but to be the best in you. .
