Once, long, long ago, when kings and queens ruled small kingdoms - TopicsExpress

Once, long, long ago, when kings and queens ruled small kingdoms and your world was no larger than the parish around the castle, there lived a kindly old king named Peeble. Everyone loved him and no one could believe what their eyes beheld one day as they walked out their door. There, right behind the castle stood a horrific mustard yellow giant. He had his index and middle fingers placed, one on each side of the drawbridge. Whenever one of the knights would ride out of the castle, the fingers snapped together and the knight perished. No one could understand why this was happening to such a nice king. “I mean, really,” said one of the knaves, “it should happen to king Gustaffo, the mean bastard who lives down on the other side of the mountain.” King Peeble was beside himself with grief. His knights were being killed one at a time and he had to get a message out to the other kingdoms to let them know of his plight. That night, after all the other knights had refused to go out, one of the pages offered to go. The king agreed and the page took the message in hand and walked out of the castle, across the moat and down the road. Nothing happened to him. When the page returned two hours later, the king confronted him. “You are all right!” asked King Peebles. “Why would the giant let you out?” “Well,” explained the Page. “Everyone knows Peeble should let their pages do the walking through the yellow fingers.”
