Once more, the political arena threatens football territory. - TopicsExpress

Once more, the political arena threatens football territory. After all the talk in Catalunya about a possible referendum to emancipate themselves from Spanish territory, La Ligas president Javier Tebas explained that, if the result favors the emancipation, FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol would not be allowed to play in La Liga. If this goes through, then both clubs would not be allowed to play La Liga matches. They couldnt do it because our Sports Law allows only one Non-Spanish territory to take part of our tournaments, and that territory is Andorra. If both clubs still want to play here, then the law would have to be modified to allow this to happen. Furthermore, the emancipated territory would have to agree, no matter what the clubs want, Tebas stated in an interview . Nevertheless, Tebas trusts this situation will come to an end, for the benefit of La Liga: I cant imagine Spain without Catalunya. I dont even want to think about La Liga without Barcelona or Lionel Messi. We would go out of business, Tebas added. Catalunyan officers want to hold the vote as soon as possible, despite Spanish authorities considering this to be an illegal practice.
