Once upon a time, global warming alarmism caused our scientists and political leaders to institute biofuel programs to lower CO2 emissions. And that was thought to be good. Today, biofuel is the leading contributor to deforestation and destruction of wilderness, loss of species and displacement of indigenous people. This is now considered bad. But too late...we are stuck with a rampant monster consuming our forests. Did we learn from that? Doesnt seem like it. We now have biomass energy plants springing up in many countries. It is now deemed good to burn trees, and wood waste to create energy. Is this another folly with disastrous unforeseen consequences? Is this a new environmental catastrophe in the making by humans? Wood residue is not waste- it is a compostable resource that should be returned to the soil. But these wood-burning energy plants may, sorry- will create a denuding of our soils. You cannot continue to crop and remove all the plant matter from the soil without that soil becoming leached of nutrients. This point seems to be missed in all I read of biomass projects - loss of soil quality by interfering with Natures cyclic composting action and all the micro-organic bio-system that benefits and enriches soil. Wood, decaying in situ, feeds back to the soil. Take that wood and burn it and the soil never benefits from that natural recycling. And now with so many wood burning plants established, what cost to our soils? I guess we can plaster artificial fertilizers on them.... Crazy stuff going on in the world of Renewables.
