One Argentine city has put benevolence before beauty choosing to ban beauty pageants and replace them with a community awards contest honoring young women who have contributed the most to their community. Officials at Chivilcoy, a town of 60,000 people in Buenos Aires province, believe the pageants promote gender stereotypes and reinforce the idea that women should only be valued for their appearance.
