One Of Our Three Greatest Needs: Love – Notes/Study Sheet (I Cor. 13:13) Introduction: * God is love – * Fruits of the spirit (Gal. 5:22ff) – * Matthew 22:40; Mark 12:28 – * The love of God is tremendous! 1. God loves His Son. * Isa. 42:1 – * Mt. 3:17 – * Jn. 1:18 - Jn. 5:20 – 2. God loves His Son’s followers. * Rom. 5:5 – God’s love is “poured out.” * Those in Christ are in covenant relationship with God (Rom. 6:3-4; Gal. 3:27). * Christ will always love us (Rom. 8:38-39; Jas. 1:17)! Sadly, men fail to love Him (Gal. 5:4; Jas. 5:19-20). 3. God loves the world. * Christ died for us (Rom. 5:8). * Purest form of love is agape – causes us to sacrifice for others. * I Cor. 13:13 – agape. * God hates sin, but loves sinners. Wants us to repent (Acts 17:30; II Peter 3:9). * God gives us continuing opportunities to repent (I Peter 4:17; 3:7-9; I John 4:17; Jude 6,15; Revelation 14:7). * We should hate sin too and spread the Gospel (Rom. 12:9; Mk. 16:15-16; Jn. 14:6). * We should love each other as Jesus loved us (Jn. 13:34). That’s how others know we’re Christ’s followers (Jn. 13:35). * We demonstrate our love for God by keeping His commandments (Jn. 14:15). Eph. 3:18-19 - 4. Mankind should love God. * Loving God is a lifestyle! Paul understood: “For me, to live is Christ” (Phil. 1:21). * Love = obedience (Jn. 14:15; Gal. 5:6). We must love in deed (I Jn. 3:18). * How do we learn to love God? By learning of His love for us (Eph. 3:18-19; I Jn. 4:19). * God’s love is demonstrative (Gal. 1:4), unselfish (Phil. 2:5ff), inexpressible (II Cor. 9:15), unquenchable (Rom. 8:35). * How do we show love for God? Respect His authority. Obey (Rom. 1:5; 16:26). Accept His word (Acts 17:11). 5. We should love others. * We’re all created in God’s image (Gen. 1:26-27). * Phil. 2:3-4 – look after others. * Not our nature (Job 2:4), but we must remember Christ (Jn. 15:13). Love – I Cor. 13:4ff * Love covers sin (I Peter 4:8). * Christians forgive their brothers & sisters in Christ (Luke 17:3). * How many problems would disappear if more love were shown? (Rom. 13:8-10). * Good Samaritan (Luke 10). 6. Love self. * Many reasons people don’t love themselves. * Every soul has value (Mt. 16:26; I Tim. 2:4; II Pet. 3:9). * The blood of the Lamb redeems us (Jn. 1:29). R.W. McAlister 5/24/09 a.m.
