One day we went for a walk at Muir Woods, which is a cross between a European cathedral, and the movie Avatar. Barbara was on a high tech walker. She and Susie had loved each other for thirty years, and at first I thought, Oh this is so sad! But we walked, one mile an hour, and we laughed, which is carbonated holiness, and we stopped to study the most hilarious birds in the giant Redwoods, and the prehistoric ferns, (bird by bird, of course). And by the end of the walk, I thought, this is kind of a tragedy, but it is also a victory lap. And I thought the third great prayer, Wow. When I got home from that walk, I wrote the first new piece of the new book, about Barbara, Susie, the walker, the birds, the Russian tourists in their high heels, the burl full of seeds of new growth. And me, wild, ruined, aging, gorgeous, nutty, marvelous me. Voila: Small Victories. Love the description of my favorite place on earth.
