One hundred fifty years ago, on May 4, 1864, August Scherneckau of the 1st Nebraska Cavalry and comrades recover from wounds: Wednesday, May 4—Today I feel remarkably better in every respect than in the last few days. The weather is nice, and we are looking forward to the arrival of a boat. I mailed off a letter to Egge. My friend Elwood is all but fully recovered; his wound is healed, even though the ball still sticks somewhere to the bone. The rifle ball [that struck him] was not as large as the pointed balls that our revolvers shoot. He must have been wounded by a so-called squirrel rifle. Actually, Elwood should be in the convalescents’ ward, but he remains here to keep me company and to assist me. He is, however, mostly absent during the day. The days are very long for me; to have to lie all the time on the same spot is not easy.
