One hundred years ago in December 1913 the Cork Corps of the Irish Volunteers was formed in City Hall, just weeks after the force was established in Dublin. This Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. a group led by Gerry White, historian of the Irish Volunteers, will be in the City Library, Grand Parade to mark the centenary of the Irish Volunteers. The event will include an exhibition of Irish Volunteer memorabilia from the Military Museum, Collins Barracks and Cork Public Museum [including guns from the Aud, artefacts, photographs and documents associated with Michael Collins, Terence MacSwiney and Tomás MacCurtain] There will also be two talks by Gerry White on The formation of the Irish Volunteers at 12 noon and ‘Baptised in Blood: The formation of the Cork Brigade of Irish Volunteers’ at 2.30 p.m. There will also be experts on hand to advise if you have any memorabilia from the period.
