One if the prominent challenges organizations encounter when deliberately building a leadership culture or engaging in any change for that matter, is their loyalty to their people. When you engage in the process and identify the values you desire your people to have, the traits and principles you want your leaders to demonstrate and live by, you will begin to realize that there are people who already work in the organization who do not possess what you want in a leader. The change is beyond what they are capable of. In knowing your people, you begin to anticipate who will be resistant to the culture change/growth. Here in lies the challenge: Can you get that person on board? Can you see them being the kind of leader you want in your organization? They have great experience, but they have to be partnered with someone else to compensate for the gaps in their leadership. What are you to do with people who you allowed for so long to not be held to higher leadership standard? After all, it was you who never place that level of expectations on them to begin with. If you want to grow your organization, they must be capable of getting on board, or they will need to explore other opportunities outside your organization. I have seen so many companies express their desire to grow and evolve their cultures, but are unwilling to successfully face the challenge of what to do with the people who do not fit the desired future culture. One of the worst things I see is the leadership thinks they can hide that person, hoping they retire soon, leave on their own accord, or just stay hidden and no one else will notice. I can tell you that your people notice. So in engaging in creating a leadership culture, or in any change for that matter, you must first ask yourself, as the leader of that organization, am I willing to grow beyond some of the people who have been with this organization? If the answer is no, then you are not ready, nor fully committed for the change. Even if you attempt the process of change, without that commitment, you will not find success.
