Habitat for Humanity buying tract for 30 homes By ADAM KONRUFF, Hub Staff Writer | Posted: Friday, June 14, 2013 1:00 pm KEARNEY — Kearney Area Habitat for Humanity has contracted to purchase 9.5 acres near 17th Street and Avenue M. “Today it’s a cornfield. In a generation, it’s going to be a neighborhood,” Kearney Habitat Board President Brandon Benitz said. He said the land and the neighborhood that will be built will add to Habitat’s legacy in Kearney. This is the largest single-acquisition of land in the 22-year history of the affiliate. The acquisition is expected to be completed by early January and will provide lots for more than 30 additional homes. Kearney Area Habitat for Humanity is working with the Community Redevelopment Authority and intends to apply for tax increment financing to help pay for utilities and paving. Benitz said funding for the acquisition comes from Habitat homeowner’s mortgage payments and local and corporate sponsors. Mortgage payments are placed into a fund that pays for future builds. He said the purchase will allow for more partnerships with the community in the future. “Land availability has been at the top of our prayer list since the beginning of the affiliate,” Benitz said. “This is an overwhelming answer to many prayers over many years and will allow us to continue our ministry here in the Kearney area for many years to come.” email to: adam.konruff@kearneyhub
