One of my brothers former high school students, who is now a surgeon, sent this to him about our dad. Mr Wong, I wanted to share a memory that I have of a wonderful and kind man that I knew when I was a little kid. His name was Ernie. He worked at the market where we did our grocery shopping. I remember him as a very tall guy with rosy cheeks and a great big smile. He had a voice that was deep and friendly. When I was young, my family was pretty poor, 7 kids, 2 parents and a few dogs and cats . A 2 bedroom one bath house. We didnt have much and money was tight. Treats were rare and when we did get a treat it was extra special. I was shopping with my Mom one day. It was summertime, we had just left the farm and were dirty, sweaty and tired appearing. I remember asking Mom for an ice cream. It was hot and just like any kid, I just wanted a treat. Mom counted her money, made a quick mental note of what groceries were needed and said no, I dont have enough money. That was it. No explanation or discussion. There wasnt enough money and that was it. After paying for the groceries, we were walking out... Ernie followed us, he tapped my shoulder and gave me the ice cream bar that I had placed back in the freezer. He told my mom that it was his treat, he handed it to me with that great smile he had. I said thank you and enjoyed my ice cream all the way home. He was a kind and generous man. I had no idea that he was your father until I saw the picture that you posted on FB. Hes the same Ernie that always greeted us with a smile and a gentle inquiry on how are day was going. This is how I remember your dad.
