One of my cherished memories was knowing that I had the right to refuse, even though I never did. In 1943 the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to force a child to salute the flag, affirming the right of students to opt out of reciting the pledge of allegiance in public schools, regardless of their religion. One of the right-wings oddest weirdnesses is their belief that their Christian children should be forced to recite a pagan pledge to a physical object, every day, five days a week, for twelve years.
