One of my favorite bands, Pink Martini, posted on their website earlier today that one of their founding members, Derek Rieth, has died. They didnt release any details, other than that they would play their hometown shows tonight and tomorrow, as Derek would have wanted. Derek was a percussionist for the band, playing bongos, congas, cymbals, and triangle. He is on all of their recordings and has toured with them around the world multiple times. Robert and I have seen the band at least a dozen times. From the Hollywood Bowl, to the Greek, to the Walt Disney Concert Hall (for New Years Eve...twice!) to an intimate garden amphitheater on a private estate outside San Francisco. Derek was always there, with an impish smile and infectious energy; as if he just couldnt hold all the music inside of him. In this youtube clip, you can see him in the foreground of a lot of the shots; dark suit, white shirt, pink tie, buzz cut. Our very sad condolences to Dereks family and to his fellow artists in the little orchestra from Portland, Oregon.
