One of my favorite parts of the standardized testing culture is that Pearson put out ads on Craigslist last year for people to grade student essays written as part of the STAAR Writing Test. As long as the applicant had a Bachelors in something, they were considered competent to judge my 4th grade students writing ability. Gee, I think that Ill go to work with Daniel tomorrow. Hes an experienced heavy equipment mechanic, able to diagnose problems and remediate engines so that they run better than they did. I mean: WHY NOT? Seeing as how I have a Bachelors degree in English (thats SOMETHING, right?) and an M.Ed. in Reading (SOMETHING ELSE, ya know), and Im going for a Masters in Library Science, so Id say that I am well-educated enough to assess his engine rebuilding skills. Im sure if I study his repair manuals, Ill be able to take an engine out of a truck, spread the parts all over the place, and reassemble it. AND, the person who has to trust me with his life when he drives the truck again will be completely comfortable with my ability to rebuild that engine, seeing as how I have a college degree (or two) in SOMETHING. 16 years, the last 8 teaching exclusively second language learners. What would I know about reading their writing and assessing their progress? Lets have some person with a B.S. in horticulture or art history judge my kids work. Makes perfect sense to me. But then Im just a TEACHER. myfoxdfw/story/20662399/craigslist-ad-solicits-staar-test-graders
